Chapter Five

"Aren't you glad we don't have a stake in all this drama anymore?" Destiny Jefferson asked.

Destiny had eighty years behind her, but still lived with the sass of someone half her age. Her husband Caleb was not quite as cheery. They sat in the corner of the room and watched their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren move about with frantic urgency.

For a pair of octogenarians like Destiny and Caleb, life had become about quiet contemplation. There was plenty of that to go around at the wedding. Everyone wanted to make their mark in the world. To make a difference. To leave a legacy.

Caleb and Destiny were surrounded by generation after generation of that legacy. It was hard not to get caught up--at least for Destiny. Caleb was more concerned with the aches and pains of his body.

"Drama comes more naturally when you're young," Caleb replied.

"Kind of like grumpiness when you're old, right?" Destiny joked.

"Here I thought I was being far less cantankerous than usual," Caleb said.

"You should be. Grumpiness has no place on a day like this," Destiny insisted.

"Actually, I was just thinking about how blessed we are."

"Really? That's not like you."

"What I was trying to say before is that drama comes more naturally when you're young, but it is regret that strikes you when you're old," Caleb said.

"It's a good thing you're not old then," Destiny joked.

"Being eighty-four years young, I am not without my regrets."

"I understand that honey, but are you sure this is the best place to be airing them?"

"That's the thing. I look around here at all these smiling faces and can't help but wonder if I spent too much of my life on discipline, and not enough on finding joy."

"Here's the great thing about joy," Destiny said. "You're never too old to experience it."

"It's funny. With my age came regrets, but with yours came wisdom."

"Wisdom has certainly eluded you," Destiny said. "Haven't you learned by now never to call your wife old?"

"You're still as beautiful as ever to me," Caleb replied.

"It's too late to butter me up now."

Caleb got wistful once again. "Don't you ever wonder if you could have done more for the kids?"

Destiny looked out at her daughters and didn't miss a beat replying to Caleb. "By the looks of it, we did a pretty good job with them. Look at this room full of smiling faces."

Caleb turned to his wife and smiled. "Thank you for always believing in me, even when no one else did."

"Sure it was a bumpy ride sometimes, but you managed to come out the other side still intact."

"You're right," Caleb said. "Although my knees really are killing me."

"I was speaking metaphorically, oh cranky one."

Caleb looked out at his smiling daughters and grandchildren. "I have been quite blessed though."
